How did Paul Verhoeven,the director of the sexfest box-office bomb SHOWGIRLS, become a member of JESUS SEMINAR?

I just noticed some posts on R&S which speak with reverence of "The Jesus Seminar" and which assume that the "scholars" of that group speak with authority on New Testament topics, so I just wondered if the public is aware just how "on the margins" they are. (That is, among Biblical scholars only a few of them have much prestige or credibility. Doesn't Verhoeven's presence emphasize exactly what it is: a publicity stunt consisting of the late Bob Funk's buddies invited to join his club?)
