Do Catholics break God's number one commandment, or not?
Veneration means to "honor" someone, and we Catholics certainly do honor the one woman in the history of the human race who cooperated in God's plan of salvation in such a singular and essential way - bringing the Savior of mankind into the world! The Bible says all generations will call her blessed! But we certainly do not worship her. Worship of anyone other than God Himself would be a form of idolatry, as clearly explained in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Idolatry is described there as "incompatible with Christian life". Yes, adoration IS the same as worship. We do not adore/worship anyone but God. We venerate or honor the saints. A statue is not an idol unless you worship it, and Catholics do not pray either TO statues or THROUGH statues (whatever that means), so there are no idols in the Catholic Church.
